About Geoffrey

Decades of classroom and one-to-one teaching experience

Geoffrey has more than 40 years of teaching experience and is a qualified Physics and Mathematics teacher. His career has included teaching in Primary, Secondary, Sixth Form College and Further Education settings in the UK and internationally.

Across those settings, Geoffrey has taught Physics, Science and Mathematics and has supported learners working towards GCSE, IGCSE and A-Level qualifications.

Alongside his classroom career, Geoffrey has around 25 years of one-to-one tutoring experience. He originally began tutoring children of friends, before recommendations and word of mouth led to more students seeking support.

During the Covid period, Geoffrey moved more of his teaching online and found that he enjoyed the format. He now uses online tuition to provide the same supportive, interactive approach while working individually with students.

Subjects

Specialist Physics and Combined Science tuition

Geoffrey supports students with understanding difficult scientific ideas, mathematical application, problem solving and exam preparation.

Physics

KS3 GCSE IGCSE A-Level

Clear and structured support with physical concepts, calculations and problem solving. Geoffrey adapts explanations to the individual student and helps learners connect mathematical methods with the underlying Physics.

Combined Science

KS3 GCSE

Science support for students who need to strengthen understanding, address gaps or prepare for school and GCSE assessments. Geoffrey's extensive classroom experience helps him make complex scientific ideas more accessible.

Teaching background

Experience across different stages of education

Geoffrey's teaching career has given him experience with students at very different stages of their education and with a wide range of academic starting points.

Primary

Geoffrey has experience teaching younger learners, helping him understand how core mathematical and scientific confidence develops before secondary study.

Secondary

Extensive experience teaching Physics, Science and Mathematics to secondary learners, including students preparing for GCSE and IGCSE qualifications.

Sixth Form

Experience teaching students at post-16 level, including the more advanced mathematical and conceptual demands of A-Level Physics.

Further Education

Geoffrey has also taught within Further Education, adding to his experience of supporting learners through different academic routes and stages.

25 years of tutoring experience

Geoffrey has been providing one-to-one tuition for around 25 years alongside his wider teaching career.

One-to-one tuition

Individual support built around the questions a student needs to ask

Geoffrey believes students make better progress when they feel comfortable admitting that they do not understand something. His lessons therefore provide a supportive environment where learners can ask questions freely and work through mistakes without feeling judged.

One-to-one tutoring also gives Geoffrey the opportunity to adapt explanations and lesson pace much more closely to the individual learner than is often possible in a larger classroom.

The goal is to improve both performance and confidence, so that students gradually become more comfortable approaching difficult questions independently.

Teaching approach

Patient explanations with room to question, practise and retry

Geoffrey views mistakes as an important part of learning. Lessons are designed to help students identify what went wrong, understand the idea more clearly and then try again with greater confidence.

Ask questions freely

Students are encouraged to say when something is unclear and ask the questions they need without worrying about getting something wrong.

Make concepts clear

Difficult Physics and Science ideas are explained in a clear and accessible way, with the explanation adapted to the student.

Practise effectively

Students apply what they have learnt through suitable questions and problems, giving Geoffrey opportunities to identify remaining gaps.

Improve exam technique

Geoffrey uses his teaching and examining experience to help students communicate their knowledge more effectively when working under assessment conditions.

Confidence in learning

Confidence is part of the learning, not something that comes afterwards

Geoffrey believes students learn most effectively when they feel secure enough to attempt difficult work, make mistakes and keep going.

Supportive

Lessons provide a calm environment where students can ask questions and work through uncertainty without feeling embarrassed.

Mistakes are useful

Getting something wrong is treated as useful information that helps identify exactly what needs further explanation or practice.

Confidence & performance

As understanding becomes more secure, students can approach questions with greater confidence and focus more effectively on improving their performance.
