About May

Academic support built around confidence, curiosity and independence

May believes that confidence is one of the foundations of academic achievement. She takes time to understand each learner's goals, learning style and specific challenges so that tuition can be shaped around the individual rather than delivered through a fixed approach.

Her experience spans more than 14 years across further and higher education, professional coaching and technology client leadership. This interdisciplinary background allows May to connect academic ideas with real-world examples and help students see relationships between subjects.

May currently delivers Business and Management courses at Levels 4 to 7 at BPP and also teaches through Hammersmith and Fulham Adult Learning and Skills Service. She previously worked as Deputy Course Director, Module Leader and Lecturer in Business and Management at Coventry University London, teaching international cohorts across Levels 4 to 7.

Her wider academic experience has included study and development across Oxford, Cambridge, UCL and Central Saint Martins, alongside professional experience spanning business, heritage and the arts.

University & postgraduate support

Helping students move beyond knowing the content

At university level, knowing the subject is only one part of producing strong academic work. Students also need to develop argument, critical thinking, evidence use, structure and an understanding of what the assessment is actually asking them to do.

May's experience as a lecturer, module leader and university External Examiner allows her to support students with these wider academic skills alongside their subject knowledge.

She also supports learners working on higher-level research and academic writing, including undergraduate and postgraduate projects and students progressing towards academic publication.

Academic coaching

Building skills students can use beyond a single exam or assignment

May brings a coaching mindset into tuition, helping students strengthen not only subject knowledge but also the confidence, resilience and independent thinking they need to manage their own learning.

Understand the learner

May starts by understanding the student's goals, current challenges, learning style and what is holding back their progress.

Create direction

Structured coaching frameworks such as GROW, CLEAR and OSKAR can be used to turn broad goals into clearer, manageable actions.

Make learning memorable

May uses connections and storytelling to bring knowledge to life, helping students understand why ideas matter rather than simply memorising information.

Build independence

Students are encouraged to take increasing ownership of their work, think critically and develop strategies they can continue using independently.

Learner support

Academic progress with the whole learner in mind

Alongside her academic experience, May has worked with learners with additional needs and has substantial experience of safeguarding, wellbeing and school governance.

SEN experience

May has experience supporting students with needs including dyslexia and ADHD and can use structured, multi-sensory approaches where appropriate.

Safeguarding & wellbeing

May served for more than three years as Vice-Chair of a primary school governing board, including as Link Governor for Safety, Wellbeing and Mental Health.

Confidence first

May aims to create an encouraging environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, taking intellectual risks and recognising their own progress.
